Huff Post Quotes Matheu Nunn on How a Parent Can Keep their Child Out of the Public Eye
April 1, 2025Einhorn Barbarito partner Matheu D. Nunn, who co-chairs the Family/Matrimonial and Appellate practices, was quoted in an article in the Huff Post titled “Can You Even Stop Your Partner from Putting Your Kid in the Public Eye? Divorce Lawyers Have Thoughts.” The article, published March 25, discusses the legal recourse a parent can take when their child is thrust into the public eye over their objection by the child’s other parent.
The article stems from a social media post by the musician Grimes, who shares three young children with Elon Musk. In the post, Grimes says that she has “begged” Musk to stop allowing their children to be seen in the media. Four-year-old son “Lil X” has been photographed with Musk and President Trump in the Oval Office.
Nunn notes in the article that every state likely will have differing laws and rules regarding minors that a parent would need to be mindful of in custody discussions, often referred to as “best interest” standards.
He says that he finds it “doubtful” that Musk’s conduct amounts to abuse or neglect “but certainly could be inimical to the children’s best interests.” He adds: “Musk is a divisive figure; by extension, the animosity expressed toward Musk could extend to his children — anything from memes and photos that remain forever in the public domain to actual physical threats and violence. … This just may be one of those circumstances in which the potential harm to Musk’s children outweighs the right of Musk to keep them in the public eye.”
